In just two years, I helped turn around the 7th most financially-troubled school district in the state, so teachers could keep their jobs and children would have a chance. With a proven record like that, I will be a strong voice that delivers results for workers, families, and seniors. Furthermore, I will listen and I will always be accessible and accountable to you. I hope to earn your vote in the Democrat Primary Election on August 5th.” -Charles
Charles Roddis was born and raised by two hardworking teachers in Southeast Michigan. Charles’ mom was the encouraging, nurturing 2nd grade teacher and his dad was the “don’t step out of line” science teacher. It was their parenting that gave Charles his work ethic and compassion for people. Charles’ work ethic and competitive streak as a swimmer helped pay for most of his college education where he became the first All-American in the history of the University of Findlay. After graduating with a degree in Accounting and Mathematics, Charles went to work comprising financial statements for counties, cities and school districts. Charles is married to his beautiful and supportive wife, Erin, and they have been blessed with two beautiful girls.
MANUFACTURING & PUBLIC EDUCATION
After passing the CPA exam, Charles was recruited to work for a medium-sized manufacturing company to help control its costs. As Operations Manager, Charles was able to control inventory, decrease delivery time and increase the on-time percentage, all while lowering costs. When the economy hit the manufacturing industry hard, Charles set his sights on education as an accountant for a public school district. Charles is experiencing firsthand the struggles of our education system, and he is working hard to put children, teachers, and parents first.
Charles has been credited for helping turnaround the 7th most financially-troubled school district in Michigan. In just 2 years, Charles’ leadership saved a struggling school district, helping teachers keep their jobs and giving students a chance to succeed. Read the turnaround story HERE.
COMMUNITY & COACH
As with many people in Michigan, Charles has worked more than one job to provide for his family. He is also a high school swim coach and he has led his teams to several championships. Over the years, Charles has volunteered as a swim coach for middle school kids, and he devotes countless hours to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
FIGHTING FOR JOBS
State government’s #1 priority must be jobs. Investing in transportation, education and technology, will create better-paying jobs and get our economy moving again. We must also expand community colleges and vocational training to help prepare workers for new high-tech jobs.
PROTECTING THE MIDDLE CLASS AND SENIORS
As a father, I have worked hard to provide for my family. We must stop playing politics with workers’ pensions and repeal Governor Snyder’s retirement tax. And we must help working families get ahead instead of giving billion dollar tax breaks to big corporations.
STRENGTHENING PUBLIC SCHOOLS
As the Finance Director of a struggling school district, I worked hard to turn things around so teachers could keep their jobs and children would have a chance. Let’s stop the Republican’s cuts to education and restore funding now.
Michigan has the 5th highest tax on gasoline but we rank near the bottom for the least spending on roads. We must prioritize funding and get serious about fixing roads. It will attract new jobs and keep us safe.
